SEO keyword audit
Track Search Console keyword positions, clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and monthly direction.
What this page is for
The Keyword Audit tracks the search queries for which the site appears and compares their direction over time.
Use it to find improving keywords, investigate declines, and see which page currently ranks for a query.
Before you use it
Connect Google Search Console to the production property. The first available month becomes the baseline, so many keywords can initially appear as New until a later comparison period exists.
Review the table
- Open Grow > SEO > Keyword Audit.
- Check the data month shown under the title.
- Search by keyword or ranking URL.
- Click Filter to narrow by:
- Position: Top 3, 4–10, 11–20, 21–50, or beyond 50
- Trend: Improved, Declined, or New
- Click a column heading to sort.
- Use the page controls to move through the full result.
Understand the columns
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Keyword | The Search Console query and current ranking URL |
| Clicks | Search clicks associated with the keyword |
| Pos | Average position; lower is better |
| Change | The size and direction of the position change |
| Impr | Search impressions |
| CTR | Clicks divided by impressions |
| Trend | Improved, Declined, New, or Unchanged |
Click the external-link control beside a ranking URL to inspect the live page.
Interpret the trend labels
| Trend | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Improved | The average position moved in a favorable direction |
| Declined | The average position moved in an unfavorable direction |
| New | There is no comparable prior-period ranking in the available history |
| Unchanged | No meaningful position change is shown |
Position is an average. It can vary by query wording, device, location, and result type.
Sync current data
- Click Sync when a manual refresh is needed.
- Leave the page open while the sync starts.
- Wait for the confirmation and refreshed keyword count.
- Do not repeatedly click Sync while a run is active.
Routine data also updates automatically, so manual sync is best used when you need a current review rather than as a daily habit.
Export a filtered list
- Search and apply position or trend filters.
- Click Export CSV.
- Confirm that the file contains the filtered rows you intended.
Use the ranking URL in the export to group several keyword changes affecting the same page.
A useful investigation
- Filter to Declined.
- Sort by clicks or impressions.
- Open the ranking URL for a material keyword.
- Check whether the same page declined across several related queries.
- Compare the page in Content Audit.
- Improve the page only when the evidence points to a content, relevance, or technical issue.
A decline in a low-volume keyword may not warrant work. Prioritize business relevance, demand, and page-level patterns.
If data is missing
- Connect Google Search Console.
- Wait for the next sync after the initial connection.
- Clear search text and filters.
- Check whether the ranking page belongs to the connected property.
- If everything is New, confirm whether this is the baseline month.
- Remember that Search Console reporting is delayed and aggregated.
