Campaign to practice-area mapping
Map Google, Meta, and OpenAI campaigns so spend, CAC, pipeline, and retained revenue are grouped correctly.
Why campaign mapping matters
Ad platforms know a campaign's name and spend, but they do not know your firm's legal taxonomy. Mapping tells Superpractice whether the spend belongs to Brand, a practice area, a service group, or a sub-practice area.
Correct mappings make practice-area spend, cost per lead, CAC, pipeline, and retained-revenue ROI useful.
Choose the right mapping
| Campaign intent | Recommended mapping |
|---|---|
| Firm name, reputation, or general awareness | Brand |
| Several kinds of work in one broad department | Practice area |
| Several related offerings in one middle family | Service group |
| One specific legal need | Sub-practice area |
| Google Local Services Ads account or campaign | Local Services Ads, where offered |
Map based on what the campaign actually promotes, not merely a word in its name.
Map Google Ads campaigns
- Connect the Google Ads account under Settings > Integrations.
- Open Settings > Google Ads.
- Find Campaign Mapping.
- Locate a campaign and choose its Practice Area.
- Choose the appropriate funnel or location values when your reporting setup uses them.
- Repeat for every active campaign that contributes spend.
- Open Grow > Google Ads and confirm the spend appears in the expected category.
Google also supports ad-group-level mapping:
- Expand the campaign row.
- Map each ad group to the practice area, group, or sub-practice area it promotes.
- Verify all meaningful ad groups, including newly added ones.
Ad-group mapping replaces the campaign mapping
When you begin mapping a campaign's ad groups, Superpractice clears the campaign-level practice-area mapping. Complete the ad-group mappings so spend is not left uncategorized.
Use campaign-level mapping when the entire campaign promotes the same legal category. Use ad-group-level mapping when one campaign contains materially different legal categories.
Map Meta Ads campaigns
- Connect Meta Ads and finish account setup under Settings > Integrations.
- Open Settings > Meta Ads.
- Find the campaign mapping section.
- Choose Brand, a practice area, a group, or a sub-practice area for each campaign.
- Review the boosted-post setting:
- Enable automatic Brand categorization when boosted posts are general awareness.
- Leave it off when boosted posts should be reviewed individually.
- Save and confirm Meta spend reporting under Grow.
Manually mapped campaigns keep their selection even when automatic boosted-post categorization is enabled.
Map OpenAI Ads campaigns
- Open Settings > OpenAI Ads.
- Review the available campaigns.
- Assign Brand or the most accurate practice-area level.
- Save and verify the category in the corresponding Grow reporting.
Campaign mapping vs. contact attribution
These are related but different:
- Campaign mapping categorizes advertising spend.
- Contact attribution records how an individual person arrived.
- Matter value records pipeline or retained revenue connected to the contact.
ROI reporting needs all three. Mapping a campaign does not retroactively create a missing click or campaign touchpoint on a contact.
Maintain mappings
Review mappings:
- After connecting a new ad account
- After an agency launches or renames campaigns or ad groups
- When a campaign changes from broad to service-specific targeting
- When spend appears as uncategorized
- Before comparing practice-area CAC or ROI
Archive or paused status in an ad platform does not automatically make the old mapping wrong. Keep historical mappings aligned with what the campaign promoted at the time.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| Spend is uncategorized | Campaign or ad-group mapping |
| A Google campaign has no selection after mapping an ad group | Finish the ad-group mappings |
| Brand spend appears under a legal area | Change the campaign to Brand |
| Practice-area revenue is present but ad ROI is blank | Contact attribution and campaign identifiers |
| New ad groups are missing a category | Expand the campaign and map the new rows |
| A Meta boosted post changed unexpectedly | Automatic boosted-post setting and manual mapping |
