Rainmaker
Understand how marketing channels produce leads, matters, retained revenue, and operating return.
What Rainmaker is for
Rainmaker connects acquisition sources to the firm's pipeline and retained revenue.
Use it when you need to compare channels, practice areas, conversion, pipeline value, or the operating return after advertising spend.
Choose the right lens
Use the header controls before interpreting a number:
- All clients — includes all applicable matter activity
- New — focuses matter-based reporting on newly acquired clients
- Existing — focuses matter-based reporting on returning clients
- Date range — controls the displayed period
The client-type lens applies to client and matter outcomes. A new lead is not yet a client, so top-of-funnel lead counts are not reclassified by that lens.
Read the headline metrics
The KPI row provides the fastest summary of:
- Leads
- Qualified contacts
- New matters
- Retained matters
- Revenue
- Advertising spend and acquisition efficiency, when available
Use the selected date range and client lens when comparing these cards. For exact metric definitions, see the Metrics glossary.
Follow the Revenue Pipeline
The pipeline connects:
Marketing channels → Leads → Qualified → Retained revenue → Sub-practice areasUse it to identify:
- Which channels create meaningful lead volume
- Whether leads are progressing to qualification
- Whether qualified opportunities become retained work
- Which legal offerings contribute retained revenue
Hover or focus supported items for more context. Treat the flow as an attribution view, not as proof that every channel interaction was the sole cause of the engagement.
Use the Rainmaker AI Summary
The summary explains notable movements in the displayed data and highlights a top channel, practice area, and outlook.
- Read the headline.
- Compare it with the charts and tables below.
- Open the underlying channel or matter records before taking a material action.
- Use the refresh control after significant data corrections.
The summary helps prioritize investigation. The numeric cards and underlying records remain the source of truth.
Review the operating sections
Matters Created vs Retained
Compare new opportunities with work actually won. A widening gap may indicate qualification, follow-up, engagement-letter, or data-entry issues.
Revenue by Practice Area
Shows where retained revenue is concentrated. Accurate service and sub-practice-area mappings make this section more useful.
Channel Performance
Compare leads, qualified contacts, retained outcomes, spend, CPA, conversion rate, revenue, immediate ROAS, and LTV-adjusted ROAS by channel.
Use a channel with high lead volume but weak retained outcomes as an investigation starting point—not as proof that the channel should be stopped.
AI / LLM Breakdown
When available, this section separates organic AI-assistant sources such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or other engines. It reports attributed leads, retained outcomes, and revenue.
Conversion Funnel
Shows:
- Leads
- New matters
- Qualified
- Retained
The percentages report conversion between adjacent stages and from lead to retained client.
Pending Pipeline
Shows open matter value and stage distribution. The labels provide a planning view of pipeline maturity. They do not turn estimated value into retained revenue.
Operating P&L
This card is a marketing operating view:
Retained revenue − advertising spendIt also presents blended ROAS, marketing margin, and blended CPA.
Not the firm's accounting P&L
Operating P&L does not include payroll, rent, vendor costs, refunds, collections timing, or other accounting adjustments. Use it to compare marketing economics, not to replace the firm's financial statements.
Recommended workflow
- Select a useful date range.
- Choose All, New, or Existing clients.
- Read the KPI row and revenue pipeline.
- Identify the channel or stage with the largest meaningful movement.
- Compare conversion, retained outcomes, and return—not lead volume alone.
- Open the source dashboard or record list.
- Confirm data quality before changing budget, targeting, or intake process.
Troubleshooting
- Missing channel revenue: check contact attribution and retained matter dates.
- Blank practice areas: check service and sub-practice-area mappings.
- Spend without leads: verify tracking and click attribution.
- Leads without matters: confirm the firm creates matters during intake.
- Different matter and client counts: one person may have multiple matters.
- Blank LTV return: configure the service-group assumptions in Settings > Data Model.
